Yep, We Are Entangled with Digital Technology! 

There is really no escaping it.

Digital technology is entangled with almost every aspect of our lives. We work through it, communicate through it, create through it, learn through it, and increasingly experience the world through it. Artificial Intelligence has only made that relationship more complicated.

So, how do you feel about it?
Inspired? Frustrated? Curious? Disgusted? Hopeful? Bored? Overwhelmed? Maybe all of the above?

That is the question behind the 2026 ETH-TECH International Art Contest, developed in collaboration with Education Is Boring and an international community of scholars and universities interested in the relationship between technology, education, ethics, and human experience. Academically, we call this exploration your postdigital positionality. In simpler terms, we want to know how you see yourself living, creating, and being human in a world increasingly shaped by digital

So, WHAT DO YOU ACTUALLY SUBMIT?

​

We call your submission a Reflection Package. At its heart is an original artwork responding to the question of how you feel about our entanglement with digital technology. Alongside the artwork, you will submit a title and a short reflection explaining the idea behind the piece and the creative process that produced it. If you use AI, tell us how and why you used it. If you work entirely by hand, tell us about your materials and process. If you combine photography, Photoshop, generative AI, collage, or anything else, tell us how those elements came together.

Below, I have included a Reflection Package I created using different digital tools as one example of what a submission might look like. Your response could (and will) look completely different. We are interested in your perspective and your creative process, rather than a particular aesthetic or technology.

WHAT ABOUT THE PRIZES? 

​

ETH-TECH is sponsoring $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place.

There is also an opportunity to put your work in front of an international academic and creative community.

Selected work will be featured through ETH-TECH, including a digital exhibition at the University of Padova, and the top five works will be exhibited at the International Transformative Learning Conference.

We have also assembled a killer international roster of judges, including Dr. Sarah Hayes, Dr. Arvind Singhal, Dr. Tanja Hoggan-Kloubert, Dr. Chad Hoggan, Dr. Petar Jandrić, Dr. Rian Roux, Dr. Juliana Raffaghelli, Dr. Mariana Ferrarelli, and Cheri Hatcher. Many of these scholars have appeared throughout Education Is Boring, so bringing them together for this contest feels like a particularly fitting extension of the project.
